Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost, 8/11/2026

Sunday, August 9th 2026

The disciples were fighting strong headwinds in their boat. And Jesus comes to them walking on the water. This event marks a turning point in Matthew's Gospel. Prior to this the disciples respected Jesus as a Rabbi. They respected Him, but they had not bowed down and worshipped Him. After all, only the Lord God is to be worshiped. But after this event, and with Jesus' words to them, they worshiped Him, saying, 'Truly you are the Son of God.' This is the main takeaway from the reading. But with that said, I want us to approach this event from an intriguing angle. I want to ask the question, why did Peter want Jesus to command him to come to Him on the water? Why did Peter want to walk on the water? Have you ever imagined being able to walk on water?
